The i3 will be BMW’s first full scale production electric vehicle. It is a 5-door hatchback that is expected to be under 2,500 lbs, thanks to it’s carbon fiber body and alluminum chassis. The i3 is expected to have a liquid-cooled LiIon battery pack between 16 and 22 kWhrs, which will give the vehicle approximately 100 miles per charge. The rear-wheel drive i3 will use roughly the same electronics and batteries as the ActiveE. The ActiveE program was conceived to fully vet any problems that this new drivetrain may have before they sell it. It is expected that the i3 will make it’s official world premier at the Frankfurt Auto Show and will be released to the public in 2013. Pricing hasn’t yet been announced.
